About the Avocado
The Hass Avocado is probably the most common and preferred avocado in the United States. Rudolph Hass is credited with it's development in the 1920's in California. It is said that the original Hass avocado tree grown by Rudolph Hass was an accident and even he did not know the origins of the seed or cuttings that produced the first Hass avocado seed. He patented the Hass avocado in 1935 but realized little profit from royalties since growers at that time failed to honor his patent. The growers bought cuttings from Rudolph's original Hass avocado tree and started their own Hass avocado groves.

Patents expire in 17 years and it is rumored that when Rudolph Hass filed his patent in 1935 he prayed and asked the Lord to let him live as long as the patent was good. He passed away in 1952 a few months after his 17 year patent on the Hass avocado expired.

Resource: 2004 article, How The Hass Avocado Came To Be, by C. Miller, granddaughter of Rudolph Hass:

Did you know...

* California is the world's 2nd largest producer of avocados.
The top producer is Mexico.

* Avocados contain more potassium than bananas.

* Avocados are sodium and cholesterol free.

Avocado Tips
A squeeze of lemon juice on fresh cut avocado will prevent it from turning brown.

Tip 2:
To remove the seed from a fresh cut avocado, hold the avocado in the palm of your hand. Strike the seed with a sharp knife imbedding it about 1/4 inch into the seed. Hold the knife steady and twist the avocado. The seed will come out easily.
